The grand opening
of the Liverpool and Manchester Railroad provoked a storm of curiosity across the world, sparked as much by the rapid economic changes in those two cities as by the sci-fi like technology that had achieved it.

Authors brought out handbooks of all kinds, and among these was "Railway Machinery" published in 1855 by Scottish railway engineer Daniel Kinnear Clark. Each book was accompanied by 30 separately bound sets of Folio sized Plates, most of which have since been rebound into a "Volume 2". Many of these books found their way to the United States of America, where the economic advantages of the railroad were massive, yet information hard to find - especially in the dark days before Photography. And it was in that country that G1MRA member David Viewing happened across an original Volume 2 and had the astuteness to dig deep into his pocket.

Time went by, David built a Crewe-Type locomotive in G1 which cried out for a period train to pull. Since member Robin Mosedale also had a Crewe-Type, they teamed up. Clark's detailed Plates of carriage stock by Brown, Marshall &Co of Birmingham became first a set of CAD 'models', then sets of etched brass 'lace'. Robin's pictures below show how they finally look made-up. Because Livery details for the pre-1855 LNWR are lost, David chose a Scandinavian livery for his train, reflecting both the international influence of Clark's book and the 'otherness' of the Stephenson era.
